Dental implants

This article is intended for those who want answers to frequently asked questions about dental implants.
It is important to know that at Dentme we do not offer dental implants, however, we can help to refer you to the right place.

If you have lost one or more teeth, dental implants may be a solution to replace them. Implants act as artificial tooth roots that are attached to the jawbone and used to stably hold a new dental crown or bridge in place. With dental implants, both chewing ability and oral health can be restored in a way that mimics natural teeth.

Dental implants are a permanent replacement that integrates with the jawbone and offers a stable, long-term solution for tooth loss.

Why choose dental implants

Tooth loss can result from accidents, diseases or age. The consequences often affect not only appearance but also the ability to chew, enjoy food and maintain good oral health.

Dental implants reduce the risk of further dental problems by replacing lost teeth in a stable and natural way. Because the implant is attached to the jawbone, the bone is stimulated and preserved, preventing the breakdown that often occurs after tooth loss.

A customized dental crown is attached to the implant. The crown is usually made of porcelain and color-matched for a natural result.

"A dental implant should feel just like a natural tooth - both in function and appearance," says Dentme's Chief Dental Officer.

Benefits of dental implants

Dental implants offer several important benefits:

Stability: The implant is firmly anchored in the jawbone and provides a natural feel.

Preserves the jawbone: The implant stimulates the bone and prevents degradation.

Natural look: The crown is carefully fitted to the surrounding teeth.

Protecting healthy teeth: Unlike a bridge, no grinding of adjacent teeth needs to be done.

Long life span: With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, the implant can last for many decades.

Convenience: Implants do not slip and do not require special adhesives. In some major reconstructions, removable implant-supported prostheses can be used.

What are the costs of dental implants

The Price of dental implants varies depending on the number of implants, the complexity of the treatment and any preparatory procedures.

A single implant usually costs between SEK 20 000 and 40 000. The cost is partly covered by the dental care subsidy:

50% reimbursement for costs between SEK 3 000 and 15 000.

85% reimbursement for costs over SEK 15,000.

A detailed treatment plan from the dentist provides full insight into costs, from examinations to aftercare.

Please note that the insertion of dental implants is not included in Dentmes Membership.

The treatment process

Step 1: Assessment and planning

Treatment starts with a thorough examination and X-rays to assess whether the jawbone is strong enough. The dentist will also analyze your general health, as certain diseases can affect healing.

Step 2: Surgical intervention

Under local anesthesia, an implant, usually made of titanium, is placed in the jawbone. The operation is normally painless thanks to the anesthesia. After the procedure, some soreness, swelling or discomfort may occur, which is a natural part of the healing process.

Titanium's unique ability to integrate with the body's tissues means that in most cases the implant is well accepted. However, failed osseointegration may occur in a small percentage of cases.

Step 3: Attachment of dental crown or bridge

After the implant has healed and grown into the jawbone, a permanent crown is attached. In the case of multiple missing teeth, a bridge or denture can be fitted between the implants. The result is fixed, natural-looking teeth.

More comprehensive treatments

In cases of major tooth loss, treatment may include multiple implants and, if necessary, bone augmentation if the jawbone is not strong enough. The dentist always adapts the treatment plan individually.

Who can get dental implants

Successful treatment requires:

A healthy and stable jawbone.

Good oral hygiene and absence of serious diseases affecting healing.

that the patient does not smoke, as smoking increases the risk of complications

Children and adolescents under 18 years of age are not usually treated with implants, as the jawbone is still growing. In some cases, treatment may be considered after individual assessment of growth.

Scope of the treatment

The number of implants depends on the extent of tooth loss:

A tooth: an implant.
Multiple teeth: multiple implants or bridges.

Whole jaws: Often four to six implants per jaw for optimal stability.

Aftercare of dental implants

Good oral hygiene is essential for the longevity of implants. Thorough brushing, flossing and regular check-ups with the dentist are recommended.

Complications such as peri-implantitis, an inflammation around the implant, can occur if bacteria are allowed to accumulate. Regular follow-up helps to prevent this.

Lifestyle factors such as smoking negatively affect the durability of implants. Smoking cessation is strongly recommended.

The importance of choosing a specialist

Dental implants are an advanced procedure that requires a high level of expertise. An experienced specialist can assess the conditions more accurately, manage any complications and ensure an optimal outcome.

Specialist dentists often use high-quality implant systems from reputable manufacturers, further increasing the chances of a successful and durable treatment.

Dental implants and your health

Oral health is closely linked to overall health. Tooth loss can affect nutritional intake, cardiovascular health and mental well-being. By replacing lost teeth with implants, you can improve both quality of life and long-term health.

Implants contribute to a stable bite, natural aesthetics and increased self-confidence, which are important for both physical and mental well-being.
