Toothache

Toothache

Toothache is a common problem that most people experience at some point in their lives. It can be caused by caries, inflammation, cracks in the tooth or infection in the nerve of the tooth. The pain can be throbbing, shooting or pulsating - and sometimes very intense.

"Toothache is the body's warning signal. By acting in time, we can not only save the tooth, but also prevent serious consequences for the whole body"
- Erik, dentist at Dentme

Getting timely professional help reduces the risk of spreading infection and unnecessary suffering.

What is toothache?

Toothache is a symptom of something being wrong with one or more teeth or the surrounding tissue. Common causes include tooth decay, exposed necks, cracks in the teeth or inflammation of the gums.

It is not the pain itself that is dangerous, but the underlying problem. In rare cases, if an infection spreads from the root of the tooth through the bloodstream, it can lead to serious conditions, such as endocarditis. This is why it is important to take toothache seriously.

Common causes of toothache

Caries(cavities in the teeth)

When bacteria convert sugar into acid, the enamel is damaged. If the attack reaches the pulp, where the tooth's nerves and blood vessels are located, a deep, pulsating pain often occurs.

Broken or loosened filling

An old filling that has come loose can expose the inner layer of the tooth, making it extra sensitive to temperature changes and pressure.

Wisdom teeth

If wisdom teeth erupt at an angle or are partially covered by the gums, inflammation (pericoronitis) can occur. It can cause swelling, pain and sometimes fever.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis and periodontitis are inflammations of the gums. If left untreated, they can cause pain, tooth loss and, in severe cases, infections of the jawbone.

Tooth fractures or cracks

Cracks in the tooth can cause temporary pain when chewing and sometimes lead to more extensive damage.

Tingling in the teeth

May be due to exposed tooth necks, brushing too hard or worn teeth. Irritation is common but should be investigated if it does not go away.

When should you seek care?

You should contact a dentist if:

-Toothache does not go away within 1-2 days

- You have swelling, fever or affected general condition

- There are signs of infection (e.g. pus, pressure sensation or bad taste)

- It is difficult to chew, speak or open your mouth normally

If you have both a toothache and a fever, you should seek emergency treatment. This may be a sign that the infection has spread.

Why do toothaches hurt more in the evening?

Lying down increases blood flow to the head, which can increase pressure in inflamed tissues and intensify pain. Sleeping with your head slightly elevated can sometimes relieve symptoms.

Treatment of toothache

Treatment depends entirely on the cause of the pain:

- Repair of holes - for caries

-Root canal filling - if the pulp is inflamed or infected

- Extraction of teeth - in case of severe damage that cannot be repaired

- Tartar removal and cleaning - for gingivitis

- Antibiotics - given for disseminated infection, but always in combination with other treatment

Toothache can sometimes require repeated visits to fully resolve.

Home remedies for toothache

These methods can provide relief while waiting for a dentist:

- Rinse with lukewarm salt water

- Apply cold compress to cheek

- Brush your teeth gently with fluoride toothpaste

- Avoid chewing on the painful side

Please note that these measures only provide temporary relief and do not replace treatment.

Medicines for toothache

Over-the-counter painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, can be used for temporary relief. Always use according to dosage instructions. Combining medicines should only be done after consulting a doctor, dentist or pharmacist.

Cost of emergency dental care

At Dentme, emergency dental care is included in the Membership (SEK 149/month). At other clinics, the Price varies, but is usually between SEK 1,500 and 2,000 for a regular emergency appointment - depending on the treatment. Any root canal, extraction or X-ray will be added.

Frequently asked questions about toothache

How do I know if my toothache is serious?
If the pain is severe, pulsating, combined with fever or swelling - seek dental care immediately.

Can stress cause toothache?
Yes, tense jaw muscles and teeth clenching (bruxism) can cause nagging pain in the jaws and teeth.

How long can I wait with a toothache?
No more than a few days. Prolonged pain should always be investigated to avoid complications.

What is the difference between a toothache and a toothache?
